Installing HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version

Welcome to HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version.

This is a time-bombed version that will stop working 30 days from the day you installed it. We advise against resetting your PC's system clock during the evaluation period. The clock may be set back by small amounts of time to allow for switching between Standard Time and Daylight Time. Setting the clock back longer amounts of time will cause HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version to stop working. If you set your clock ahead, the software will not stop working automatically, but this will of course shorten your evaluation period. Once the 30-day evaluation period has expired, the software cannot be re-installed and used again.

System requirements

HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version runs on Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0. Your system must have the following, or higher:

Installing HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version

There were two options for downloading the HoTMetaL files over the Web. The steps for installing the product are different for each option.

Option 1: If you downloaded the product in one piece, then the file hm5ev.exe should be present on your system.

Option 2: If you downloaded the product in three pieces, then the files hm5ev_1.exe, hm5ev_2.exe, and hm5ev_3.exe should be present on your system.

You will need approximately 65 MB of free disk space in order to install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version. Approximately 40 MB of this will become free again after the install has completed. The HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version software occupies approximately 26 MB of disk space.

If you chose Option 1

  1. Double click on hm5ev.exe.

This will extract the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive that you downloaded, and will start the HoTMetaL installer.

  2. Follow the instructions given by the installer.

Note: The default installation folder is HoTMetaL PRO 5 Eval. If you already have HoTMetaL PRO 4.0, or any earlier version of HoTMetaL, on your PC, do not install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation version in the same folder as any of these products.

  3. Make sure that HoTMetaL PRO can be launched successfully.
  4. You can now delete the file hm5ev.exe.

If you chose Option 2

If you downloaded three files, carry out the following steps:

  1. Double-click on hm5ev_1.exe.

This will extract part 1 of the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive that you downloaded.

During this process, you will be asked to enter the Installation Directory (folder) into which the files should be extracted. This is a temporary folder that you will delete when the installation is complete.
  2. After all files in part 1 have been extracted, part 2 (hm5ev_2.exe) will be run automatically, then part 3 (hm5ev_3.exe).

Make sure to specify the same installation folder each time.

You will get an error if:

You can easily correct this by downloading any missing files. Then start by extracting part 1 again (respond Yes to all to overwrite files that you extracted the first time).

  3. After you have extracted all three parts into the installation folder, go to the installation folder and double-click on Setup.exe to install.

  5. Make sure that HoTMetaL PRO can be launched successfully.
  6. You can now delete the files hm5ev_1.exe, hm5ev_2.exe, and hm5ev_3.exe, and the temporary installation folder and all the files and folders that it contains.

Possible installation problems

Anti-virus programs often interfere with installation

If you have any type of anti-virus program installed on your PC (for example, Norton Anti-virus), disable it before you install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version, as this type of program often interferes with the installation process.

Installer sometimes fails to register DLLs and OCXs

If the HoTMetaL installer gives you an error message indicating that it did not register the required DLL and OCX files, you can complete this step by running a script, as explained here:

  1. Choose MS-DOS Prompt from the Programs menu
  2. Change directory to the system folder (usually C:\windows\system)
  3. Run the script by typing fixocx.bat at the MS-DOS prompt
  4. If any errors occur, open the script file with a text editor, identify the lines that caused the errors (just look for the OCX or DLL name that appeared in the error message), and enter each of those lines individually at the MS-DOS prompt.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Active Desktop

HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 uses Internet Explorer components in its implementation of the following features: the Asset tab in the Resource Manager, WYSIWYG-Frames view, Page Preview, Site Maker preview, and macros. Additionally, the Thumbnail View and the Open dialog preview window require that Microsoft Active Desktop be installed.

HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 will still operate on Windows 95 and NT 4.0 if Internet Explorer and Active Desktop are not installed, but these features will be unavailable. On Windows 98, these features will always be available.

For best results, you should have Internet Explorer version 4.70.3110.8 or later installed on your PC; if you use an older version, some of the features listed above may not work correctly. To obtain Internet Explorer, go to Microsoft's site at http://www.microsoft.com/ and download the latest version of Internet Explorer 4.0. Internet Explorer is language-specific; if you are using a non-English version of Windows, make sure that you download the version (plus service pack if required) that applies to your system.
